In February, 106 students were selected to participate in UBRP and its umbrella programs for Summer 2020. In March, in response to COVID-19, the University of Arizona moved all of its Spring 2020 courses online for the safety of its students, faculty, and staff. Now, in May, UBRP is navigating the challenges and details of arranging summer research experiences for students as UA works on transitioning back to in-person research activities… and we are staying strong!
UBRP’s priority is for students and mentors to conduct research in a safe manner this summer. Following UA protocol, our first group of 32 students will start UBRP in May, while a second group of 68 students is slated to start on July 1 and will continue research part-time through the Fall 2020 semester. Additionally, in these unprecedented times, some students have found themselves having to support their families, provide childcare for siblings, or facing serious illness; in response, UBRP has also offered students the option to defer their UBRP experience until next summer without having to reapply, so that they can focus on the situation at hand.
Altogether, 100 students will be participating in UBRP for Summer 2020! Amidst navigating the challenges, we look forward to working together with students, mentors, and administrators to give participants great research experiences this summer.
