In these challenging economic times people frequently
ask, "How is UBRP doing?"
I should work on my sound bites because this simple
question is hard to answer succinctly. The facts may
speak for themselves. Here are some data:
UBRP has been part of the educational experience of:
* 500 physicians and 500 scientists
including 50 MD/PhDs
(practicing or in training)
* more than 85 allied health professionals (including
pharmacists, dentists, physical and occupational therapists,
nurses, perfusionists, EMTs, and others)
* nearly 30 teachers
* 22 attorneys
* numerous engineers
* several veterinarians
* a host scientist for National Geographic
* an advocate for child victims of sex trafficking
* a bilingual environmental educator at the Arizona
Sonora Desert Museum
* two University of Arizona professors and faculty
members at Brown University, Washington University
in St. Louis, University of Pennsylvania, Tufts, Pima
Community College and elsewhere
* a couple of venture capitalists
* technical writers, government policy makers, business
people, IT consultants, and parents....lots of parents
(a growing number of parents...!)
UBRP has accomplished a great deal in furthering the
experience and educational goals of our current students
and program alumni.
Nevertheless we continue to be challenged. This
year we secured an NIH grant to continue the BRAVO!
program for another five years. But our
HHMI grant, which provides partial support for a large
number of UBRP students, is up for competing renewal. While
the UBRP faculty mentors continue to pay 50% of the
students' wages, the program must secure the means
to match the faculty mentors' contribution. We
need an endowment for UBRP. This would be a fantastic
time to contribute. Contributions can be made
on line with a credit card, or by check. See: <https://ubrp.arizona.edu/donate.cfm>
