End of Summer UBRP Picnic

The warm day was starting to cool and the sun was getting lower in the golden sky.  Everyone was wearing their "anticipating the weekend smile," while red polo shirts mingled between different groups.  The UBRPers in the red polo shirts were our own UBRP Ambassadors.  Talks of experimental results and experiences were being shared along with sandwiches and frozen delights from Eegee's.

Everyone was enjoying each other's company. -- some were chilling on the cool green grass by the sand volleyball courts; and some on the brick wall; others were at the Eegee's table, which was probably the best place to chill by, no pun intended!  After a couple of rousing laboratory anecdotes and sandwiches, a few of the UBRP students hit the warm sand of the volleyball courts.  It started with casual, random bumping of the white ball.  Next thing you know, a game was evolving.  Everyone was completely entrenched on the location of the ball in the sky as it bounced from side to side.  People were scrambling to keep the ball in play and hitting the sand.  After a few rounds, the score was forgotten, but the game was still going strong.  The game was more entertaining than having a winning team.

Before the sand had a chance to cool, another group of students were dancing in a circle to music - a cakewalk was in progress.  Each UBRPer was fighting for the chance to stake his/her claim on one of the nine wonderful cakes, graciously donated by a few of the students who had a baking party the night before.

Warm weather, beautiful skies, sandwiches, Eegee's, cake, sharing research and knowledge, water balloons, volleyball -- what more is needed for a great enjoyable day to end the summer!  A final volleyball game, this time with points on the line.  A couple of spectators waiting for their turn were invited to join.  A full court of competitiveness, teamwork, and lots of high-fives roared from the sands.  What a great end to the summer and hello to the academic year.

Jimmy Chhun, URBPer with Dr. Tsu-Shuen Tsao's lab, Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics.
