Opportunities and Choices

Job Opening:  I'm looking for a student to assist in the fall with a seedbank study comparing the response of buffelgrass and native seed densities and diversity to herbicide treatments and fire.  Specifically, the student would help collect and process samples but would also be able to participate in meetings with stakeholders where the management significance of this and other studies are being used to refine control and adaptation strategies.  For more information, contact Travis Bean, School of Natural Resources, 520-629-9455x104, bean@email.arizona.edu.

Request: This week, the Brindle lab made the cover of Nature. Sarah Nelson would like a copy, and hopes that someone out there has a subscription to the journal or would know someone with a subscription that could save her a copy. Here are the specifics: June 12, 2008 Volume 453, Number 7197, pp 823-956.  Please contact Sarah at sknelson@email.arizona.edu

Postdoctoral Research Scholar appointments are available in the Center for Applied NanoBioscience in the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University. The research emphasis will be the development of molecular bioassays for lab-on-a-chip biodosimetry applications.   Successful candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in an appropriate field (such as molecular biology or biochemistry) at the time of appointment. Experience with microarray technology, gene expression analysis, and nucleic acid sample preparation protocols is required. Duties include: assist with assay design and testing, as well as implementation and validation of the assay in collaboration with various academic and industrial collaborators; establish and write monthly project reports and collaborative documents; participate in scientific meetings and conferences; contribute to writing scientific publications. The work demands the handling and processing of blood samples on a regular basis. The successful candidate will work on a NIH-sponsored project that focuses on the development of a rapid gene-expression based biodosimetric assay exploiting direct target amplification from small volumes of blood for measuring the response of bio-signatures to the exposure to low dosage radiation. Knowledge of radiation biology would be preferred. Salary and benefits are competitive. Postdoctoral Research Scholar appointments are renewable annually for a maximum of three years, contingent on satisfactory performance, funding availability, and the needs of the program. The successful candidate is expected to work in Tucson, Arizona, at a facility of the center's industrial collaborator.  Qualified individuals should submit a CV plus cover letter and the names, addresses (e-mail and/or street), and telephone numbers for three (3) professional references to: Silke Kruger, Center for NanoBioscience, Biodesign Institute, via email: silke.krueger@asu.edu.
