Opportunities and Choices

Applications are being accepted for an undergraduate research assistant (URA) (10-15 hours/week) in the Tissue Optics Laboratory, which is located in the Bio5 Keating Building. The URA will assist with experiments, including survival and terminal imaging of animal models of colon and ovarian cancer, and subsequent data analysis. Applicants must have outstanding organizational and communication skills. Any of the following would be a plus: experience with animal handling, IACUC training, imaging and optical instrumentation, statistical analysis, image analysis, Photoshop, ImageJ, or Matlab. Applicants interested in holding this position for at least two semesters and interested in full-time summer employment will be preferred. If interested, please send a resume or description of relevant experience/knowledge/coursework, and name of at least one reference to Dr. Jennifer Barton, Biomedical Engineering: barton@u.arizona.edu.

Judges Needed: to read posters and interview students at Tucson High Magnet Schools' Science Fair. Meet interesting and motivated high school students doing real science! From 8:00 AM -12:30 PM read posters and provide written feedback (students will not be present), from 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm interview students. Yes, live high students will be at their posters to talk to you and answer questions. Your help is needed during any part or the entire event. If you are interested in participating email margaret.wilch@tusd1.org or call 225-5000 let her know what times are good for you.

The Global Change Education Program (GCEP) promotes undergraduate and graduate education/training in support of the DOE global change research activities. GCEP has two components: The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) is a ten-week research program and the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships (GREF) is a fellowship program for students who have successfully completed at least one year of graduate school. Global change research encompasses a variety of technical areas including atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climate modeling, and terrestrial processes. Since 2005, GCEP has focused attention on aerosols and their radiative effects in coordination with the change in the CCRD Atmospheric Science Program's focus in atmospheric chemistry and physics. CCRD supports global change research through its Atmospheric Science Program (ASP), Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM), Terrestrial Carbon Processes (TCP), Program for Ecosystem Research (PER), and the National Institute for Climate Change Research (NICCR). Currently, ASP and ARM research projects are examining aerosols and their radiative effects, and the formation of clouds and their impacts on climate, respectively. TCP and PERprojects are focused on understanding the terrestrial ecosystems and their effectiveness in sequestering carbon. Other studies address integrated assessments of Global Climate Change and Information Integration. For more details about GCEP-SURE and -GREF, and to access electronic applications, please visit the website http://www.atmos.anl.gov/GCEP/. The application deadline is February 4, 2008. Contact Barbara Dunkin at (865) 574-6440 or Barbara.dunkin@orau.org if you have questions.

Tenure Track Position: The Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Program at Grand Valley State University is seeking candidates with experience in biotechnology and molecular biology for a tenure-track position to begin in the Fall 2008. A PhD in molecular biology or related field and excellent communication skills are required; biotechnology, teaching and postdoctoral experience are desired. Teaching responsibilities will include an advanced undergraduate nucleic acids lab, courses in the Professional Sciences Master's biotechnology curriculum, and other CMB offerings. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain active scholarship - research involving undergraduate and/or Master's students is desired. Grand Valley State University is a primarily undergraduate institution whose faculty members are expected to advise students and participate in the academic governance of the department, college and university. Apply online at http://www.gvsujobs.org/. Include a cover letter, CV, statements of teaching philosophy and research interests, and scanned copies of your transcripts. Arrange to have three letters of reference sent to: Mark Staves, CMB Search Committee Chair; Biology Department; Grand Valley State University; Allendale, MI 49401-9403 (stavesm@gvsu.edu).
