The Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Internship Program provides opportunities for qualified undergraduate and first year graduate students to receive hands-on experience in a real-world setting that prepares them to become part of tomorrow's workforce for 10 weeks during the summer. Discipline(s): engineering, computer science, health physics, meteorology, chemistry, physics, biological sciences, environmental sciences, emergency management, public health, epidemiology, accounting, finance, audit, communications, graphic design, human resources, and instructional technology. The University of Arizona BIO5 Institute announces the 2007 summer and academic year industry internships at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. Summer internships for graduate students: Three months, 20 hours/week at approximately $5,000. Academic year internships: Semester-basis, 10 hours/week, students expected to also maintain a .25 GA-ship. Interns are selected competitively from the group of summer interns. Graduate and undergraduate students who have advanced research training will be considered based on the basic requirements listed below. Interested students who meet the requirements must submit the following materials by March 5, 2007: cover letter, CV, letter of recommendation from primary faculty advisor, demonstrating that the advisor is supportive of the internship experience, an additional letter of recommendation from one other member of the advisory committee. UNLV and the Desert Research Institute are offering a Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Environmental Microbiology. The grant will provide students with the opportunity to work on a research project for a 10-week period with a faculty mentor. Students will receive at $4000 stipend and housing in a UNLV dormitory. Each REU student is expected to develop a hypothesis based research project in conjunction with their mentor. The students will prepare a poster and a brief oral presentation summarizing their research at the end of the program. The U.S. Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Sciences is hosting an Environmental Health and Toxicology Photography Contest and Photography Exhibition. According to the World Health Organization - "Environmental health comprises those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial factors in the environment. It also refers to the theory and practice of assessing, correcting, controlling, and preventing those factors in the environment that can potentially affect adversely the health of present and future generations." The photographs should show what environmental health means to the student. Deadline: must be received by Thursday March 1, 2007. (1) Each student may submit up to 2 works for consideration. (2) An Entry Form must be attached to the back of each piece of work. (3) Work submitted may NOT be mounted or matted. (4) Images may be made in black and white, color, digital, and toned images, hand-coloring, painting on the photograph, use of mixed-media, montage, collage, and other experimental techniques are all encouraged. No print larger than 16 x 20 will be accepted. (5) Entries will be judged on the basis of originality, technical ability, artistic merit, and quality of statement and presentation.
(5) Winners will be asked to present an artist statement at the Inaugural Ceremony and Global Environmental Health Workshop Awards Luncheon on Wednesday March 14, 2007. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is accepting applications for the Leonard Rieser Fellowship in Science, Technology, and Global Security for the 2007-2008 academic year. The Rieser is intended to help students pursue projects that explore issues at the intersection of science, global security and public policy. Applications are due March 15, 2007.
