Opportunities and Choices

The Amgen Scholars Program is now accepting applications for Summer Quarter 2007! The University of Washington, selected as one of ten sites nationally to host the Amgen Scholars Program provides a new and important opportunity for some of the nation's top undergraduates to explore and prepare for careers in science and biotechnology. Participants will receive housing, travel assistance, and a stipend to participate in this exciting and intensive summer research experience on the UW Seattle campus. Students should contact the UW Undergraduate Research Program at urp@u.washington.edu with any questions. Application deadline is FEBRUARY 16, 2007. Note that though Seattle is one of the sites and this message is specifically from that office, there are nine other participating sites.

Tucson High Science Fair Needs Judges on Friday March 1, 2007 at Tucson High Magnet School, 400 N. 2nd Ave. Main Building Library. Posters will be on display from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Students will be available for interviews from 12:30 to 3:00. How you can judge: (1) read and provide written feedback, 9:00 AM-12:30 PM (2) meet and converse with the students from 12:30 PM-3:00 PM, or both!

The US Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Sciences is hosting an Environmental Health and Toxicology Photography Contest and Photography Exhibition. According to the World Health Organization - "Environmental health comprises those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial factors in the environment. It also refers to the theory and practice of assessing, correcting, controlling, and preventing those factors in the environment that can potentially affect adversely the health of present and future generations." The photographs should show what environmental health means to the student. Deadline: Must be received by Thursday March 1, 2007. (1) Each student may submit up to 2 works for consideration. (2) An Entry Form must be attached to the back of each piece of work. (3) Work submitted may NOT be mounted or matted. (4) Images may be made in black and white, color, digital, and toned images, hand-coloring, painting on the photograph, use of mixed-media, montage, collage, and other experimental techniques are all encouraged. No print larger than 16 x 20 will be accepted. (5) Entries will be judged on the basis of originality, technical ability, artistic merit, and quality of statement and presentation.
(5) Winners will be asked to present an artist statement at the Inaugural Ceremony and Global Environmental Health Workshop Awards Luncheon on Wednesday March 14, 2007. The American Society for Engineering Education is pleased to announce the opening of the 2007 application for the Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART). The SMART Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support the education and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is used to recruit and to retain civilian scientists and engineers to work in DoD agencies and laboratories. Full tuition, education fees, book allowance, stipends, paid internships, and career opportunities are provided for students awarded this scholarship. The application closes on February 5, 2007. SMART Scholarships are offered to undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for training and education in STEM fields. Students are also provided opportunities to continue their research in civil service roles following graduation. Through SMART, we are proud to offer our research leaders of tomorrow not only an education, but also a career. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to citizens and nationals of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible. Proof of citizenship will be required. Students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible. Applicants for undergraduate awards must be already enrolled in a U.S. college or university. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is accepting applications for the Leonard Rieser Fellowship in Science, Technology, and Global Security for the 2007-2008 academic year. The Rieser is intended to help students pursue projects that explore issues at the intersection of science, global security and public policy. Applications are due March 15, 2007.
