After the first attempt at a UBRP hike on Mt. Lemmon
was rained out by the same storm that devastated Sabino
Canyon, the second attempt was a success! It was an early
7am departure, but well worth it. The varied conversation,
spectacular views, friendships made, and information
gained were wonderful.
We hiked up the side of the ski resort passing giant
trees, and when we reached the top, the 2006 fire-season
lookout man greeted us. He welcomed us all into his tiny
summer home atop a rock. The views were truly awe-inspiring.
Alas, there was a big grey cloud gathering above, and
Carol insisted that we hurry down the trail. Previous
experience had taught her that being stuck in a storm
up there is no fun!
We reached the bottom and the weather held out enough
for Carol to show us a few huge trees which some of us
tried, unsuccessfully, to climb....
We then ventured to the local schoolhouse, which is not
in session this year because at least six children are
needed for the doors to open, but we weren't there for
that. The locals have formed a non-profit organization
to help restore Mt. Lemmon from the devastating fire
a few years ago. The organization helps to provide protection
for remaining trees, educational materials and trees
for the re-vegetation/reforestation of the mountain,
and promotes healthy forest policies. They are also combating
cheatgrass, an invasive species found on the mountain
recently.
We wound down the afternoon by eating our lunches on
Carol's cabin's porch, which overlooks Summerhaven. All
in all it was a very enjoyable day and anyone who has
the opportunity to do this in the future should!
