Lunch on Us!

What I enjoyed most about Dr. Giancarlo Pepeu's presentation was not only his expertise in his field of neurobiology and pharmacology, but also his sage advice to young scientists. Dr. Pepeu began his professional career as a medical doctor; however, he found the sense of detachment necessary when treating patients was too difficult to maintain, and instead developed an interest in research. Between having numerous important positions on various research related committees in Italy, being a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Florence, and continuing to host BRAVO! students, it is evident that Dr. Pepeu has extensive experience with the changing science trends over the years. For example, he noted that there has been an observable shift in the scientific community toward specialization, which despite allowing for deep understanding of one research focus, detracts from the scientists' ability to see the bigger picture. He also noted that while technology consistently improves, the job market becomes increasingly competitive.

Despite certain negative changes, Dr. Pepeu maintains a positive attitude about the future of science, asserting that it is imperative to live in the present rather than lament the past. He emphasized that since science is universal, it is important that young researchers take advantage of the opportunities to study abroad, like BRAVO!, in order to comprehend international questions in the scientific community. On a lighter note, he stressed the importance of having fun, both in one's job as well as outside of it. Although I originally attended lunch with Dr. Giancarlo Pepeu and his wife Dr. Ileana Pepeu in order to learn more about the BRAVO! program, I left with a greater appreciation and anticipation for the potential of science.
