All Paths Lead To Your Future
The unifying theme of the Careers in Research
and Industry panel presentation was: “All paths lead to your
future.” The panelists all began their successful
careers on quite different paths from where they are
today. It was inspirational to hear Louis Breton,
CEO of Arc Technologies, say that while it is important to
choose the right job after graduation, THE job may be
down the road. That is, it may take a while to realize
your full potential and it may not be in the direction
you’ve planned on.
It was amazing to see all the avenues that a degree in
the sciences can lead to. Jim Ostrem reassured us that
a career in industry could be very supportive of your
development. He began in plant science research and is
now the Senior Director of Clinical Development for
ImaRx Therapeutics, a company that develops medical therapies.
Anne Fritz, Senior Research Specialist, Department
of Pharamacology and Toxicology, UA and Silvia
Ronco, Program Officer, Research Corporation showed us that scientists
could become philanthropic leaders. Every member of the
panel is distinguished in the unique directions they’ve
taken for their careers. As they spoke, a collective
relaxation seemed to run through the audience. If THE
destination will be there when we reach it, then maybe
it is okay to relax and enjoy the ride.

What does your typical anteater cost? What country would
you be in if the Peace Corps issued you your own camel?
How does a fine arts major get to be a research biologist
and then the Dean of Science, Mathematics, Technology
and Engineering at Pima Community College? What characteristics
make a good academic administrator? What can you do
if you train to be a research scientist, do two post-doctorates
(one at Oxford), and then decide you haven't published
enough to make research a viable career? What occupational
hazard felled the high school biology teacher who was
scheduled to speak at the April 6 Biology Career Event?
If you had been there, you would know the answers to
all of these questions and more! So don't miss a single
Biology Career Event next year!
