Introducing...

...faculty sponsor, Dr. Diana Sammataro, Research Entomologist, Carl Hayden Honey Bee Research Center. Dr. Sammataro's lab is working on novel strategies for control of Varroa mites. Apis mellifera, the European honeybee, is responsible for the pollination of over 90 fruits and vegetables grown in the US with an economic contribution over $20 billion annually. Honey bee colony populations are in jeopardy because of the introduction of a parasitic bee mite, Varroa (Varroa destructor), which kill honeybees. The lab has begun to test alternative compounds and to develop novel Varroa controls that are less harsh on the bees and the environment. Alternative controls are being developed that all beekeepers can use easily, safely, without killing bees or contaminating hive products.
