Opportunities and Choices

The UBRP office has received information and application materials for a variety of research experience programs, grants, scholarships, conferences, jobs, and graduate programs. What follows is a sampling:

Undergraduate Students: Looking for field experience? Do you need field experience and want to learn about birds and their habitat in Sonora, Mexico? I am seeking one or more assistants to help survey for, then monitor, nests of ferruginous pygmy-owls in northern Sonora Mexico between mid-April and mid-June, 2006. The work involves tape-play back surveys, nest searching, and using a micro-video camera and video display to monitor nests and document contents. I am also looking for experienced birders, who want to explore some selected and sometimes remote areas of Sonora in search of rare species and habitats between June and August. Work involves hiking and camping in the field for approximately one-week field trips. Short commitments are possible. All expenses and a stipend will be provided. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Aaron Flesch at flesch@ag.arizona.edu or 730-4656.

Sea Education Association (SAE), Woods Hole, Massachusetts offers college students a semester overseas that challenges them intellectually and physically by combining a sailing adventure of a lifetime with the study of the deep ocean. Scott Hiller, admission counselor at the SEA works with students from the University of Arizona. Check out their website: www.sea.edu or contact Scott Hiller at shiller@sea.edu for more information.

Job Opportunity: an excellent job opportunity for anyone looking to work as a biotech lab technician has become available. It is a permanent, full-time job, with full health and retirement benefits, and starting annual salary of 35-55K. Maricopa is an explosively-growing community and there is plenty of housing here for anyone interested in the job. Check the job announcement or call Ben DeRidder at: bderidder@wcrl.ars.usda.gov

Application deadlines vary, so don't waste any time! Check our files (LSS 348) or contact these sites directly.
