Opportunities and Choices

The UBRP office has received information and application materials for a variety of research experience programs, grants, scholarships, conferences, jobs, and graduate programs. What follows is a sampling:

Research/Job Opportunity for a Plant Physiologist in Panama. We are looking for a recent university graduate with training in plant physiology or biochemistry who wants to obtain research experience. The applicant should have good laboratory skills. We have a position open for an assistant starting in May-July, 2006 until about June 2007. The work is at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute facilities on Barro Colorado Island and is an investigation of the factors determining the distribution of plants. The present research will focus on experimental studies of the physiological and morphological factors that may determine distributions. We will pay your room and board on Barro Colorado Island, plus $400 per month and one round trip airfare to Panama. Knowledge of both English and Spanish is NOT required. Please send a statement describing your previous research experience along with your career and scientific interests, a CV, and the names and emails of three people who can serve as references to Tom Kursar: kursar@biology.utah.edu. The National Cancer Institute’s Integrative Cancer Biology Program (June 12 - August 11) offers summer research opportunities for rising Junior and Senior level students to engage in innovative, integrative biology approaches to cancer research through the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP). Selected student participants will be paired with an ICBP faculty-mentor from a participating center based on their research interests. Through mentored research projects and/or laboratory work, faculty lectures, seminars, discussions and other activities, the student will gain an understanding and appreciation of major questions currently under investigation as well as the novel approaches being used within the ICBP centers. Tucson High Magnet School 2006 Science Fair is Thursday March 2 and judges are needed! Judging consists of two phases: reading, scoring and providing written feedback on the poster presentations and interviewing students at their posters. Reading and critiquing of posters will start at 9:00 a.m. in the THMS library. Students will be available for interviewing from 1:00 until 3:00. Any time that you can contribute is greatly appreciated. Tucson High is located at 400 N. 2nd Ave, across from the southwest corner of the University of Arizona. To enter the campus, use the 6th St. entry across from 2nd Ave. Check in at the front gate and you will be issued a visitor’s pass and given direction to the library. Please contact Margaret H.
