Opportunities and Choices

The UBRP office has received information and application materials for a variety of research experience programs, grants, scholarships, conferences, jobs, and graduate programs. What follows is a sampling:

Undergraduates: Dr. Karen Schumaker, Plant Sciences, is looking for an undergraduate student to help out in her lab. If you know someone who is interested, please have him/her contact Dr. Schumaker directly at: schumake@ag.arizona.edu or by phone at: 621-9635.

Leonard Rieser Fellowship in Science, Technology, and Global Security is now accepting applications for the 2006-2007 academic year. The Rieser Fellowship is intended to help students pursue projects that explore emerging or critical issues at the intersection of science, global security and public policy. It is an excellent opportunity for a student to conduct a special research project or participate in an overseas conference. Applications are due March 10. For additional guidelines and applications forms, visit www.thebulletin.org/about_us/rieser_fellowship.htm

The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine conducts a Summer Student Program for high school and college students. This program provides an opportunity to conduct independent research under the guidance of staff scientists. The program provides free room and board and a stipend. Please see: http://www.jax.org/education/ssp.html. Contact: summerstudents@jax.org

There are also research opportunities for undergraduates during the academic year (do not provide room and board or a stipend). Please see: http://www.jax.org/educaton/acadyrprog.html

Pre-doctoral Study: The University of Maine together with The Jackson Laboratory and the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, has initiated an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional degree program in Functional Genomics, supported by an interactive faculty from the three institutions. The University of Nevada, Reno has an outstanding Graduate Program in Biochemistry with particular emphasis on biomedical, insect and plant biochemistry and molecular biology. The Program supports new students during their first academic year to allow them to take rotations in different laboratories and thereby identify a project they would like to continue for their MS or PhD research degrees. Their research advisor then provides subsequent support. For more information email: sharonk@unr.edu or check website http://www.cabnr.unr.edu/biochemistry/

Application deadlines vary, so don't waste any time! Check our files (LSS 348) or contact these sites directly.
