Wondrak’s
research interests: Reactivity-based drug discovery aims
at developing chemical reagents into potent drugs that target
chemical mechanisms such as oxidative and carbonyl stress
underlying various human pathological conditions. My drug
discovery program has identified novel agents for skin photoprotection
and anti-melanoma chemotherapeutic intervention: (1) 'Quenchers
of photoexcited states' are novel topical agents for
skin cancer chemoprevention that act by quenching of singlet
oxygen and other endogenous photoexcited states formed in
human skin after initial absorption of solar photons. (2)
'Carbonyl scavengers' are a novel class of experimental
anti-melanoma therapeutics that induces cancer cell apoptosis
by opening
of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex.
