Opportunities and Choices

The UBRP office has received information and application materials for a variety of research experience programs, grants, scholarships, conferences, jobs, and graduate programs. What follows is a sampling:

The regional meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which is called SWARM (Southwest and Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting), will be held at the UA Student Memorial Union from Wednesday, April 13 - Saturday, April 16. This multidisciplinary conference provides a terrific opportunity to hear some interesting talks.

Symposia include one on "Metabolic Syndrome: Diabetes and Obesity Connections," that features speakers from the CDC, VA and from Mexico; one titled "Anasazi, Drought, Volcanoes, and Forest Fires: A Century of Dentrochrolology in the Southwest," featuring faculty from the UA Tree Ring Lab, a workshop on skills you need to succeed in science-based careers and more. There will also be a set of hands on science activities for precollege students at the Flandrau Science Center on Saturday, April 16 from 10 - 2 (includes free admission to the Flandrau) in conjunction with the conference.

Registration fees for the 2005 meeting are: Regular $50.00, Undergraduate/
Graduate Student $25.00, K-12 Teacher $20.00, and K-12 Student $10.00. One day pass (for non-presenters only) $10.00. If you are waiting to pay at the meeting, there will be an additional $10.00 late payment fee. For more information, please visit the SWARM website at: http://www.aaas-swarm.org/signup.cfm

This internship is posted at Monsanto and was brought to our attention by Gary Lee, a former postdoc from the Vierling lab.

Job Title: Biotechnology Intern
Job Number: mons-00003829
Location: Chesterfield, MO

Responsibilities: A student that has completed undergraduate course work, and has laboratory experience, in molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry would be an ideal candidate. Knowledge of plant biology and protein analysis (protein extraction from tissues, western blot analysis, etc.) would be advantageous, but is not required. Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team will be important considerations, as the research team works in a cross-functional environment where scientists with diverse expertise are being brought together to overcome obstacles and deliver innovative solutions to unsolved challenges.

Requirements: We are seeking a talented and motivated undergraduate student to contribute to our efforts in biotechnology for crop yield enhancement as a summer intern. This internship represents an exciting opportunity for a student to gain experience working at a leading agricultural biotechnology company, and to have a role in delivering the next generation of biotechnology products aimed at enhancing crop productivity. A primary responsibility will be characterizing genetically modified plants at the molecular and biochemical level to confirm the presence and activity of various genes, and to gain insight as to their mode of action in the plant. Although the intern will work primarily at the lab bench, the opportunity for some limited work in the field also exists Go to: http://sh.webhire.com/servlet/av/jd?ai=554&ji=1530949&sn=I
