Adventures in Optical Illusions: The Eyeball and the Brain

Over six weeks this summer, students from UBRP participated as instructors for a science camp run by the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The camp, entitled Adventures in Optical Illusions: The Eyeball and the Brain headed by Valerie Bontrager, focused on uncovering the secrets of the eye for children aged 4 to 12. The camp used activities such as eyeball and brain dissection, studies of motion using strobe lights, and Internet research to allow the children to explore the wonder that is the human eye. U of A juniors James Deer, Molly Englehard and Julia Gerace all participated in the experience, which also featured the artwork of artists such as M.C. Escher, Patrick Hughes, and David Hockney, as well as a unit on optical illusion for children to puzzle their eyes over. All in all the experience was a valuable opportunity to bring science to a larger audience, some of whom may one day be aspiring researchers themselves.
