Opportunities and Choices

The UBRP office has received information and application materials for a variety of research experience programs, grants, scholarships, conferences, jobs, and graduate programs. What follows is a sampling:

National Conference on Undergraduate Research has issued a call for abstracts for the 17th National Conference on Undergraduate Research to be held March 13-15, 2003 at the University of Utah. The deadline for abstracts for NCUR is November 15. For more information about the conference and to submit an abstract, go to the following website: http://conferences.utah.edu/abstractform.html

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has also issued a call for abstracts. The meeting will be held in Denver, Colorado, February 13 18, 2003. The deadline for submission of AAAS abstracts is November 8. For details, see the AAAS website at: www.aaasmeeting.org AAAS is a great meeting for undergraduates because it is multidisciplinary. You can get free admission to the meeting (a considerable savings) if you volunteer as a session aide. This is a great way to meet people. For more information about this opportunity see: www.aaasmeeting.org/students

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships applications are available at: http://www.gates.scholarships.cam.ac.uk/index.html In selecting scholars the Trust seeks students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom further study at Cambridge University, UK would be particularly appropriate. Students need to provide evidence of their ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline, either by research, or by teaching, or by using their leaning creatively in their chosen profession. Students must also gain admission to the University of Cambridge to pursue courses of study as: second Bachelor degree as an affiliate student; one-year postgraduate courses; research leading to the degree of PhD. UBRP alum Johanna Schmidtke '02 received this scholarship in 2002.

Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) invites you to be a tutor in our after school program at Mansfeld Middle School. The program focuses on basic math, science and English. You can volunteer one, two, or more times a month depending on your schedule. If interested and want to sign up, please e-mail Alexandrina Barela at abarela@email.arizona.edu
