Alumni News

A note from Oscar Serrano '01, alum from Dr. Bill Dantzler's lab, Physiology, tells us that he has been "doing research this summer at the Mexico City General Hospital in Mexico City in the Department of Experimental Biology, Infectious Disease Division." His research involved, "assessing the efficacy of a new technique to administer measles vaccines to 1-2 year old via aerosol through T-cell mediated and hum oral responses. If the results prove that indeed aerosol works just as well as the established method, we may provide a better means to vaccinate children against measles in third world countries." In September, Oscar will return to Stanford to continue his MD/PhD studies. oks@stanford.edu

Tasha Altheide '93, alum from Dr. Margaret Kidwell's lab, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, writes, "I finished my PhD in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology in April and am now an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at UC San Diego with Ajit Varki. My new lab is a glycobiology lab, focusing on the role of sialic acids in Biology, evolution and disease." mengels@rctech.com

"I just finished my first year of law school at University of Washington. I met a lot of wonderful brainy people (a surprising number of science and engineering majors in my class of 165), and I am working for an incredible organization as a legal intern this summer (The Friends of the San Juans). Friends is dedicated to preserving the environment (San Juan/Island County). The Public Interest Law Association at UW Law gave me a grant to work specifically on a project aimed at preserving forage fish. I am also working on growth management policy for San Juan country. I love my job and where I live," writes Dawn Noel '00. While in UBRP Dawn worked for Dr. Nick Strausfeld, Neurobiology; Dr. Irene Pepperberg, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology; Dr. Steve McLaughlin, Arid Lands; and Dr. Robert Frye, Soil, Water, and Environmental Science. dan2@u.washington.edu
