Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP)

The University of Arizona/HHMI EXROP Program is designed to identify and nurture academically talented science students who might not otherwise go on to graduate school. The ultimate goal of the program is to contribute to the education of a diverse pool of academic scientists. An early step in the education of this group of individuals is to provide an enriching laboratory research experience that will encourage participants to choose to pursue graduate school and a research career.

Eligibility:

Eligible students are:
  1. Those who come from backgrounds that inhibited, but did not prevent them from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and ability required to enroll in an undergraduate institution, or

  2. Those who come from a low income family and can be certified by UA as having "exceptional financial need" in accordance with guidelines published by the Department of Health and Human Services (see below).

Benefits

The student selected will work with one of more than 60 Howard Hughes Investigators in the United States for an 8 -10 week paid research experience. Some of the HHMI investigators are Nobel Laureates, and all are exceptional scientists in a position to provide an exciting research experience for a student.

Application Process

Students complete and submit EXROP application to the UBRP Office by November 30, 2007.

Committee reviews applications. Selected applicants will be interviewed the week of December 03, 2007.

Applicants will be notified by December 07, 2007. In January, the student selected as the EXROP student will work with Carol Bender on selecting a placement in an HHMI Investigator's laboratory somewhere in the United States.

The student will spend the summer working with the HHMI investigator. The student's housing and transportation costs will be paid and s/he will receive a $4,500 stipend.

For questions please contact Carol Bender at bender@u.arizona.edu or by phone at 621-9348.
